Currently Head of Cello at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Richard is proud to mentor a new generation of cellists who are thriving on the international stage. In recent years his students have earned places at some of the world's leading institutions, including the Royal College of Music in London, the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, the Curtis Institute of Music, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Mannes School of Music in New York, and Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. Within Australia, too, Richard's students have auditioned for and won coveted positions in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the fellowship programs of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria, reflecting Richard's commitment to cultivating artistry of the highest level.
An internationally recognised educator, Richard has been invited to give masterclasses at several prestigious institutions worldwide, including The Tianjin Juilliard School; University of Florida; University of Toronto; Sydney Conservatorium of Music; Australian National Academy of Music; The Hartt School, University of Hartford; Baldwin Wallace Conservatory; University of Michigan; and Northwestern University.
His pedagogical approach emphasises cultivating both artistic individuality and technical mastery, using a variety of approaches that can be adapted to different repertoires and student learning needs. This allows each student to achieve their full artistic potential, whilst also equipping them with the skills necessary to be able to continue to learn and develop well into the future.
